It’s an indisputable fact that overweight and obesity are growing health problems in this country. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), “During the past 20 years, there has been a dramatic increase in obesity in the United States and rates remain high. More than one-third of U.S. adults (35.7%) and approximately 17% (or 12.5 million) of children and adolescents aged 2—19 years are obese.”
In addition, health experts acknowledge that heart disease, type 2 diabetes, stroke, and certain types of cancer are obesity-related conditions and some of the leading causes of preventable death. These conditions “…Affect an estimated 97 million Americans and are the second leading cause of preventable death in the United States” says the CDC. CDC also estimated “an annual medical cost of obesity in the U.S. was $147 billion in 2008 U.S. dollars; the medical costs for people who are obese were $1,429 higher than those of normal weight.”
Dr. O’Shea says, “Most overweight people are really starving. They’re always hungry because the body is craving and continually hoping for real nutrients, instead of the constant river of foods that are devoid of nutrients. And that brings us to the holistic view he says: support the body so it can do what it does.”
“The solution to losing weight is a whole food plant-based diet, coupled with a reasonable amount of exercise. It is a long-term lifestyle change, rather than a quick-fix fad, and it can provide sustained weight loss while minimizing risk of chronic disease,” says Dr. T. Colin Campbell and I agree. One of several benefits of consuming a plant-based diet and adhering to the R.E.B.A. Principles discussed in my book, My Journey to Vibrant Health… and how you can get there, too is, as your body becomes healthier you will naturally lose weight—and continue until your body reaches its ideal weight.
Even though I was overweight when I set out upon my health journey, ridding myself of asthma—not losing weight—was my priority. Nonetheless, when I switched to a plant-based diet and whole food nutrition my body became healthier and less toxic, to my surprise I started losing weight automatically. And I continued to lose weight, slowly but surely, until my body reached its ideal weight, which remains stable today.
