A POSITIVE MENTAL ATTITUDE AND BELIEF IN SELF-HEALING

“Changing the inner attitude of your mind can change the outer aspect of your life.”  ~Anonymous

If we want to create long-term health, we must cultivate a powerful belief in our body’s ability to restore and maintain great health. Having belief means we must let go of the usual way we think health and disease are created and treated.

The human body is an amazing machine that’s capable of regulating, balancing, and regenerating powerful health. However, we must provide it with the proper tools necessary to do its job.  Our responsibility is to create the health-generating lifestyle that leads to vibrant health.

Also, we must maintain a positive mental attitude as we travel down the most rewarding health journey of our life, and be willing to do whatever it takes to reclaim and preserve our health and well-being.

Whether we realize it or not, our lack of health is partly the result of how and what we think about. Health experts agree that our thinking affects our bodily functions that ultimately manifests as physical limitations in our body.

It’s well established that everything in our life starts with our thoughts and beliefs. Thinking positive uplifting thoughts and believing that God can and will heal our body when we do our part, is the most important thing we can do to help ourselves. Remember if we don’t think our body can heal itself, chances are, it will never heal.

Certain forms of self-negation—like criticism of self or others, anger, anxiety, doubt, jealousy, suspicion, fear, worry, hate, envy and thoughts of lack and limitation prevent the flow of our innate healing power. And such negative thinking causes imbalance in our body that eventually leads to disease. Thus, it’s important to spend time training our mind to think positively and constructively at all times.

A grateful, joyful attitude and a positive outlook on life are necessary to live a healthy, happy, successful life. Additionally, we must protect our body from overindulgence of the wrong foods and beverages and our mind from evil and despair, if we want to create a healthy lifestyle and maintain excellent long-term health.

Wallace D. Wattles, back in 1910, in one of his classic books, The Science of Being Well (http://www.scienceofbeingwell.net/) notes, “If our thoughts always relate to disease, then our thoughts become a fixed power to cause disease within us. And if our thoughts always relate to health, then our thoughts become a fixed power exerted to keep us well.”

The bottom line is, we must watch our thoughts and make sure we entertain ideas of positive health and not negative disease. And the best way to do that, according to Wattles, is to “(F)orm a mental picture of yourself as being well, imagining a perfectly strong and healthy body, and spend time contemplating this image to make it your habitual thought of yourself.” In other words, we must do what we can to keep hope alive!

My Health Retreat on Maui

From March 30th – April 6th, I spent seven days in Maui, HI on a health retreat lead by Michael Klaper, MD, with the help of a talented group of experts on health, wellness and vitality.

Dr. Klaper is an experienced, caring physician who shared healing secrets from 40 years of clinical experience in acute care as well as preventive and nutritionally-based medicine. He is currently a staff physican at True North Health Center in Santa Rosa, CA.

Our participation in this very special holistic event included a private medical consultation with Dr. Klaper, plus one full week of fresh fruit and vegetable cleansing juices and plant-based cuisine, inspirational talks, health lectures, cooking classes, and transformative yoga sessions in a beautiful luxurious retreat center, Lumeria Maui.

After breakfast each day, we met as a group with Dr. Klaper for a lecture and Q&A session exploring ways to optimize healing in our body – and in our life.

Alese Jones, Yoga Professional, invited us to commence on our own path of knowing our true self, with the time honored teachings of yoga and meditation. She encouraged us to explore our full potential and taught the importance of creating a strong physical foundation so the mind can find rest and the spirit can be joyous.

Chef Chad Sarno, New York Times Best Selling Author, Culinary Educator and Self-Proclaimed “Plant-Based Promoter” taught us how to prepare delicious, health-enhancing meals.

Beautiful surroundings

Beautiful surroundings

Alan Cohen, author and Inspirational Life-Coach provided a warm blend of wisdom, intimacy, humor and vision for our personal, professional, and spiritual growth.

During five of the seven days, I participated in a freshly-made juice fast. To my surprise I did not get hungry or weak in anyway. With exception of a slight headache (for a couple hours on the third day), I felt terrific with greater clarity and a deep feeling of gratitude.

We started each day with meditation and yoga followed by breakfast. For those of us who participated in the juice fast, our breakfast consisted of a pint of freshly made fruit and vegetable juice and all the filtered water and herbal tea we desired. In fact, this was the “recipe” for all meal times. Those who did not participate in the juice fast consumed light plant-based cuisines.

Although options for free time excursions on Maui were available, the focus of our program was rest and restoration. As a result, we were encouraged to partake of the healing foods and extraordinary event location Dr. Klaper chose for us.

Serenity at Lumeria Maui

Each day during the retreat built upon the next, deepening our understanding of our body, food, awareness and life. I enjoyed the calm beauty and relaxing walks through lush tropical and edible gardens as well as the optional, and wonderful, spa treatments.

This was a magical, week-long healing journey that enriched my life in many ways. It was a week of rest and restoration and imaginative re-visioning of my health and life. I felt, and continue to feel, lighter, healthier, and more balanced.

Thanks Dr. Klaper!

Internal Body Cleansing

Cleansing your colon and continuously detoxifying your cells, tissues, organs and systems are prerequisites for achieving health and vitality. Your body must be able to eliminate the toxic wastes and harmful bacteria that cause a multitude of diseases.

When your colon contains old fecal waste for an extended period of time, elements of the waste product can be re-absorbed into your body and hinder the proper functioning of your intestinal tract and every cell, tissue, organ and system in your body. If you do not flush out these toxins and waste materials, it is very difficult to create the level of health, energy and peace of mind you desire and deserve.

Colon hydrotherapy, also referred to as “colonics,” is a simple way of cleansing the colon. It is defined by the colon experts as, “. . . the gentle infusion of water into the colon to cleanse the colon of accumulated waste material, gas, mucus, still undigested foods, and toxins. It helps improve muscle tone of the colon, facilitating the natural peristaltic action necessary for efficient removal of waste and absorption of nutrients.”

HIGHTLIGHTED COLON IN PURPLE - For Internal Body Cleansing

Natural health experts worldwide agree that most illnesses, old age, and even death itself are due to the accumulation of waste products in the body, specifically the colon. These toxins prevent the body from replenishing its cellular structures and organs with fresh, vital nutrients.

Dr. Norman W. Walker, D.Sc., a colon health expert, wrote, “The colon is the most neglected and forgotten part of the body. Colon health emphasizes prevention rather than cure and is the most important step in maintaining or regaining vital health. If the sewer system in your home is backed up, your entire home is affected. Should it be any different with your body?”

My answer is, NO!

As Dr. J.E.G. Waddington reported, “Colon therapy is not intended to be a cure-all, but is a valuable procedure for a wide variety of conditions of ill health. Intestinal malfunctions are precursors of many illnesses. The restoration of intestinal elimination, too often ignored, is an important preliminary course to the restoration of health. An inefficient colon is not always the cause of sickness, but it is believed to accentuate and prolong any and all diseased conditions of the human body.”

I highly recommend that you have periodic colonics administered by a licensed colon hydrotherapist. It is necessary to flush the waste and sludge out of your major elimination organs so you can avoid self-poisoning from accumulated body waste.

Early on my health journey, I learned the importance of colon cleansing and the fact we all should have it done periodically. What a huge difference in the way my body feels after each session! In addition to feeling lighter and more peaceful, I have more energy.

3 GLASSES FRESH VEGGIE JUICE - For Internal Body CleansingIn addition to colon cleansing, I urge you to detoxify your liver, kidneys and gallbladder periodically. There are many effective detoxification programs on the market today. Use your common sense when selecting the one that is appropriate for you, or contact a naturopathic physician for advice.

These procedures initiate the cleansing process and jumpstart your journey to vibrant health and wellness. After implementing in your daily life the R.E.B.A. Principles discussed in my book, My Journey to Vibrant Health…and how you can get there, too, your body will cleanse and detoxify itself on an ongoing basis—naturally.

Physical Exercises

According to the National Institutes of Health website, “Regular exercise is a critical part of staying healthy. People who are active live longer and feel better.”
For your body to function properly and maintain health, participating in regular physical exercises four to five times per week is absolutely imperative. During physical activities, fresh blood is forced into the blood vessels throughout the body, toxins are washed away and oxygen and nutrients are distributed to all cells, thus, help strengthen and heal the entire body.

Many health experts agree that a lack of exercise lowers metabolic efficiency, and without circulatory stimulation, your body’s natural cleansing systems are weakened. By engaging in exercises for a minimum of 30 minutes at least five days a week, according to researchers, you add from 18 months to four years to your life.

Also, experts say that exercise:

  • Stimulates and builds the cardiovascular, respiratory and lymphatic systems
  • Builds and strengthens the bones and muscles to prevent the bone-weakening disease, osteoporosis
  • Builds the nerves, blood, glands, lungs, heart and brain
  • Enhances clarity of mind and mood
  • Helps to maintain a healthy body weight that relieves pressure on your bones and joints, which can help prevent conditions such as arthritis
  • Helps you sleep better; a good night’s sleep helps maintain your physical and mental health.

FAMILY RIDING BICYCLES - For Physical Exercises

For maximum benefits, you should be consistent with your exercise plan. Even better, it would be a good idea to build a simple exercise program into your lifestyle. That way, you can eliminate any excuses for not following through. If you do, you will become more fit as time passes.

Healthy Body Weight

It’s an indisputable fact that overweight and obesity are growing health problems in this country. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), “During the past 20 years, there has been a dramatic increase in obesity in the United States and rates remain high. More than one-third of U.S. adults (35.7%) and approximately 17% (or 12.5 million) of children and adolescents aged 2—19 years are obese.”

In addition, health experts acknowledge that heart disease, type 2 diabetes, stroke, and certain types of cancer are obesity-related conditions and some of the leading causes of preventable death. These conditions “…Affect an estimated 97 million Americans and are the second leading cause of preventable death in the United States” says the CDC. CDC also estimated “an annual medical cost of obesity in the U.S. was $147 billion in 2008 U.S. dollars; the medical costs for people who are obese were $1,429 higher than those of normal weight.”

Dr. O’Shea says, “Most overweight people are really starving. They’re always hungry because the body is craving and continually hoping for real nutrients, instead of the constant river of foods that are devoid of nutrients.  And that brings us to the holistic view he says: support the body so it can do what it does.”

“The solution to losing weight is a whole food plant-based diet, coupled with a reasonable amount of exercise. It is a long-term lifestyle change, rather than a quick-fix fad, and it can provide sustained weight loss while minimizing risk of chronic disease,” says Dr. T. Colin Campbell and I agree.COLOR DIAGRAM FOR WEIGHT LOSS - For Healthy Body WeightOne of several benefits of consuming a plant-based diet and adhering to the R.E.B.A. Principles discussed in my book, My Journey to Vibrant Health… and how you can get there, too is, as your body becomes healthier you will naturally lose weight—and continue until your body reaches its ideal weight.

Even though I was overweight when I set out upon my health journey, ridding myself of asthma—not losing weight—was my priority. Nonetheless, when I switched to a plant-based diet and whole food nutrition my body became healthier and less toxic, to my surprise I started losing weight automatically. And I continued to lose weight, slowly but surely, until my body reached its ideal weight, which remains stable today.

Whole Food Nutrition

What is whole food nutrition and why is it necessary? Whole food nutrition is whole, concentrated, food-grade herbal plants (not medicinal herbs), fruits and vegetables that nourish, balance, and cleanse the body—naturally. In short, whole food nutrition is unprocessed whole plant food with all nutrients still intact, including live enzymes and antioxidants.

Herbal whole food nutrition, which is necessary for the regeneration of healthier cells, and beneficial for NUTRITION WORD CLOUD - For Whole Food Nutritioneveryone, including infants and children, provides proper nourishment for the entire body. Because vital nutrients are missing from plant foods grown in American soil today, whole food nutrition is even more critical in creating great health.

Given that plants are grown in mineral-depleted soil, there are no or very little nutrients to be absorbed by plants and passed on to you and me. And according to Dr. Michael Colgan, that is why “Americans are malnourished. Even when we succeed at eating a balanced diet, our systems still suffer from the actual lack of nutrients in foods.”

These missing nutrients are the result of pollution, soil erosion, and conventional farming methods that depend on chemical pesticides and fertilizers. And it does not end there. During preparation of the already nutrient-deficient food, 50 percent of the remaining nutrients vanish. In other words, cooking vegetables further depletes the nutrients and seriously damages its nutritional value according to experts.

A chart from The Nutritional Security Institute shows an eighty-year decline in mineral content of one medium raw apple, thanks to soil erosion and crop raising practices that deplete soil nutrients, and negative effects from pesticides that inhibit natural food development.

Yet the FDA still maintains that we should get our vitamins and minerals from the foods we eat. But it is impossible to do that if our soil does not supply plants with enough nutrition in the first place. Americans can eat the proper portions of healthy fruits and vegetables and still be deficient in nutrients.

FRESH HERBS - For Whole Food NutritionAs I personally learned early on my quest to better health, merely eating vegetables was not sufficient to heal my body and keep me healthy. During the first nine years on my journey, I consumed a plant-based diet in addition to a variety of synthetic vitamin supplements that had little or no effect on my health. I continued to suffer with asthma, which became more severe with each passing day. By the end of the nine-year period, I had developed other health problems and suffered two back-to-back life-threatening asthma attacks in one week that sent me to the hospital emergency room.

My experience after adding herbal whole food nutrition to my daily regimen was—and still is—amazing. My health returned at warp speed because my body was finally getting all the nourishment it needed to regulate, balance and heal itself. Almost immediately I felt better, had more energy and my cravings for unhealthy sugary, salty and fatty foods diminished and actually disappeared over time. Today, herbal whole food nutrition is a major part of my daily regimen and the core of the R.E.B.A. Principles I teach.

Plant-based Diet

FRESH FRUIT AND VEGGIES - For Plant-based DietOne of the first and most important steps you can take to improve your health is to gradually switch to a plant-based diet of fresh organic fruits, vegetables, seeds, nuts, and whole grains. Dr. T. Colin Campbell has stated, “The most powerful drug-free weapon against sickness and disease known to man is a whole foods plant-based diet. There is overwhelming scientific support for one simple plant-based diet.”

Are you aware of the following statements? ‘You are what you eat’ or, ‘the foods you eat today will determine the diseases you will develop later in life.’ According to Dr. Fred Bisci, “It’s not just what you put in your body. It’s what you leave out that’s of top importance!” I totally agree.

Based on conversations with countless people over the last 15 years, I have formed the opinion that most Americans experience a serious disconnect between the type of foods and beverages they consume and the diseases they develop later in life. Because the ‘foodless food’ consumed does not usually impact health immediately, it is difficult for people to see a connection. Nevertheless, it is there, and the evidence is indisputable.

To live a long, healthy life and to be in control until the end, it behooves you to consume a plant-based diet of fresh organic fruits, leafy green vegetables, nuts, seeds and whole grains. I agree with Dr. Richard Schulze that “… (T)his wonderful and amazing planet contains all the natural substances that we could possibly need, not only for our food, but also for our healing and health. We just have to open up our hearts, have faith, live clean, and use these natural gifts, and then step aside and watch the healing, even watch the miracles happen.”

ROASTED VEGGIES - For Plant-based DietWhen you consume a plant-based diet, you will experience an immediate improvement in your overall health and energy level. Many natural health experts agree that a plant-based diet can help slow down the aging process; boost your immune system, and lower your risk for heart disease, cancer, and other diseases!

Another benefit of consuming a plant-based diet is, as your body becomes healthier you will naturally lose weight—and continue until your body reaches its ideal weight. Even though I was overweight when I set out upon my health journey, ridding myself of asthma—not losing weight—was my priority. Nonetheless, when I switched to a plant-based diet and my body became healthier and less toxic, to my surprise I started losing weight automatically. And I continued to lose weight, slowly but surely, until my body reached its ideal weight, which remains stable today.

Switching to a plant-based diet requires a complete mindset shift and major lifestyle modifications, especially regarding your dietary habits. Replacing animal-based food with a plant-based diet takes time, a burning desire, a firm commitment, and plenty of self-discipline.

A plant-based diet is discussed in detail in my book, My Journey to Vibrant Health… and how you can get there, too.  The e-book is available on smashwords.com and the Kindle edition is available on amazon.com. You can purchase the paperback edition from this website.

Book Excerpt from Chapter 2 – Two Major Focuses of the R.E.B.A. Principles

Two of the three major focuses of the R.E.B.A. Principles are:

1. Personal Responsibility

“There are NO incurable diseases, NONE.
Take RESPONSIBILITY, and be willing to CHANGE,
and you can heal yourself of anything.”
~ Dr. Richard Schulze

Your health is your responsibility and, therefore, in your hands, not dependent upon anyone or anything outside of you. No matter what your health problems may be, or how long you have had them, drug-free solutions do exist—despite what doctors may have told you. But it is your duty to find and implement those solutions in your daily life. Remember, it is your life that is on the line here.

Taking responsibility for your health means making healthy lifestyle choices and watching what you put into and onto your body. And it starts with a heavy dose of desire, commitment, a mindset shift, and determination. Remember you are the only chance your body has. If you do not assume responsibility for it, then who will? No one else can eat, sleep, meditate, exercise, breathe fresh air, or absorb sunshine for you. These are your responsibilities.

In his book, Why Christians Get Sick, Dr. George H. Malkmus states that, “Many people have a problem accepting personal responsibility for their own health problems. It is a lot easier to believe that some germ or virus or outside influence over which they have no control caused their physical problem, than it is to acknowledge that they personally caused the problem themselves.”

Dr. Malkmus continues, “Often, because of ignorance, people will even blame God or say that it is God’s Will, thus, once again, shifting the blame away from themselves. When we place the blame on some outside force, could it be we don’t want to acknowledge the possibility that perhaps something we are doing or not doing is responsible for our illness?”

After ‘knocking on death’s door several times in the past, I am alive and healthy today because I assumed responsibility for my own health and refused to allow anyone or anything to stop me. And today, studies show that an increasing number of Americans are taking the same dogmatic attitude and assuming more responsibility for decisions concerning their health. That is very encouraging!

If you want to enjoy a vibrantly healthy life, one of your greatest priorities must be a commitment to assertively—even aggressively—take responsibility for your own health. Yes, it will take time, but the rewards for achieving vital health and peace of mind are so much greater.

When you learn how to take responsibility for your own health decisions and actions, you will become more peaceful, tolerant, and accepting of your health condition. As you realize your health is in your hands, you will likely do whatever it takes to regain and maintain it. When I assumed responsibility for my health, I became more peaceful, less fearful, and my confident soared, because I finally realized that my health outcome was in my hands. For the first time in my life, I understood that I possess the power to choose which direction my health would take—degeneration and disease or regeneration and vital health. How liberating is that?

I realize that death is inevitable, but how we live our life and the quality and dignity with which we die are left up to us. We have the unique ability and responsibility to make our life and death as high quality as possible.

2. Prevention

“The fact is, conventional medicine does a spectacular job of managing acute health care problems like trauma and infections, but it has failed miserably in the arena of preventative care and the management of chronic illness.”
~ Noah McKay, M.D.

Prevention, prevention, prevention—is the core message here. Hopefully, it will empower you to take charge of your life so you can live in confidence knowing you will not become a statistic of modern medicine—because you understand how to prevent disease from occurring in the first place.

Know that drug-free solutions do exist. You need only to find and apply them in your life. As Dr. T. Colin Campbell stated on his website, “Prevention is the best medicine; the American healthcare system is the third leading cause of death in the country, with adverse drug reactions, medical error, hospital infections, and surgical errors totaling more deaths than heart disease or cancer.”

Preventing illness is a mindset. And to achieve vital health, your mindset must be that you can prevent disease by taking charge of your health today and implementing the health principles discussed in this book. When you take care of your body, your body will take care of you. You will experience improved health, an incredible surge of sustained energy, and your sense of well-being will soar. How great is that!

On the other hand, the mindset of modern medicine is to wait until disease appears and then to treat and manage the symptoms with drugs, surgeries, chemotherapy, radiation, dialysis, etc. My question is, why would you wait to receive a negative diagnosis from your doctor before you start taking care of your body?

Most chronic degenerative diseases can be prevented by engaging in the proper lifestyle choices that lead to long-term health. Using the strategies in this book, you will learn how to, not only regain your health, but also how to prevent diseases from occurring in the first place.

Many Americans are living in fear of developing a major illness because they do not know what to do to prevent it. They feel their ill health is beyond their control, so they leave it up to their doctor to make them better. Well, there is no time to worry about what could happen or to transfer your healthcare responsibility to your doctor. Instead, implement the principles discussed in this book and trust your innate healing power to keep disease at bay. There are no guarantees, but I know from personal experience that if you apply these health principles, you will reap the benefit of great health and wellness.

Book Excerpt from Chapter 3, Five Health-related Observations

Following are five health-related observations I became aware of during my journey to health:

Observation #1: With each passing day, you are getting healthier or sicker, and heading toward disease, meaning that every day you are either building health or producing disease in your body. The great news is you get to choose in which direction you want your health to go. You can choose actions that will allow your body to regenerate and heal itself, or behaviors that will cause degeneration and disease.

Every cell in your body is constantly being replaced. And based on your daily lifestyle choices and habits, those new cells are being regenerated into either a healthy or unhealthy environment. If your internal environment is healthy, the new cells become stronger and healthier overtime. On the other hand, if your internal environment is toxic and unhealthy, those new cells become weaker and weaker until they reach a diseased state. Thus, your health or lack thereof, is in your hands—not your doctor’s or anyone else for that matter!

Observation #2: You cannot poison your body into health with prescription or over-the-counter drugs, chemotherapy, radiation, etc. Nor can you heal your body by cutting out unhealthy body parts through surgery. If this were so, pretty soon you will run out of body parts. The fact is these procedures cannot heal your body now or in the future. Yes, you might experience temporary relief, but that is not health. Make no mistake about it, when the underlying cause of disease is not dealt with, it will eventually return more deadly than before. Cancer is a great example.

Observation #3: Your body was created with incredible power to heal itself and prevent disease. To do so however, it requires the fundamentals of a plant-based diet, whole food nutrition, filtered water, internal cleansing, mindset shift, etc. Remember your body is nutrient-deficient, not drug-deficient. I will discuss this healing power in more details in Chapter 4, under, “Divine healing power within.”

Observation # 4: Should you choose to continue to engage in your current lifestyle habits and pretend you are invincible, your health will continue its downward spiral into a sea of bad health, much pain and suffering, temporary quick fixes, and disease management involving medication and surgeries. And during this journey to premature death, you will no doubt pay an enormous price in pain, misery, and money just trying to stay alive. Unfortunately, for too many Americans it may be too late. The evidence is overwhelming and undeniable. Just look around and you will see the appalling consequences of choosing this path.

Observation #5: On the other hand, should you choose to step-up and assume full responsibility for your health and implement the R.E.B.A. Principles, self-healing and vibrant health will be yours to enjoy for the remainder of your life! Come on Americans, you have everything to gain and nothing to lose but bad habits, adverse drug reactions, body fat, fatigue, and chronic disease. If you do not feel better and have more energy after implementing the R.E.B.A. Principles, you can always go back to doing what you have been doing and feeling awful as a result. The choice is yours!
